Omeprazole
Omeprazole works by decreasing the amount of acid your stomach makes.
It relieves symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and persistent cough.
This medication helps heal acid damage to the stomach and esophagus, helps prevent ulcers, and may help prevent cancer of the esophagus. Omeprazole belongs to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).
Indications:
•Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): treatment of erosive reflux esophagitis, long term management of patients with healed esophagitis to prevent relapse and symptomatic treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
•Gastric and duodenal ulcer.
•Treatment and prophylaxis of NSAID-associated ulceration.
Points of interest:
•Antacids may be taken along with this medication. If you are also taking sucralfate, take omeprazole at least 30 minutes before sucralfate.
•If you are self-treating with the over-the-counter product, do not take it for more than 14 days unless directed by your doctor.

•Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about ways to prevent bone loss/fracture, such as by taking calcium (such as calcium citrate) and vitamin D supplements.
•This medication may interfere with certain laboratory tests (including urine test for tetrahydrocannabinol-THC, blood test to find certain tumors), possibly causing false test results. Make sure laboratory personnel and all your doctors know you use this drug.
